-- Iranian men crowned at Asian Weightlifting Championships
A total of eight medals — including double golds — saw Iran’s men’s team claim the top spot at the Asian Weightlifting Championships in Jinju, South Korea. Iran stood atop the table with 635 points, four points clear of second-placed Uzbekistan, with China in the third spot.
On Saturday, Ayat Sharifi and Alireza Yousefi walked away with a couple of silver medals in the +109kg contest to help Iran win the first men’s title since 2017.
-- Iran, Iraq to extend gas deals for five years: Minister
Iranian Oil Minister Javad Owji announced that his ministry will extend two major gas export deals with neighboring Iraq for another five years. Iran currently has two gas export contracts with Iraq’s Baghdad and Basra power plants, the oil minister said, adding that: “Based on the agreement of both parties, the two contracts will be extended for the next five years after going through expert procedures,” Shana reported.
Owji made the remarks after meeting with Iraqi Energy Minister Ziad Ali Fazel.
-- Iran stands by Palestine both in ‘words and action’
Over the past two days, Iranian officials have expressed their steadfast commitment to the Palestinian youth, noting that Tehran, as always, will support them both in “words and action.”
Addressing a cultural ceremony in Iran’s northeastern city of Mashhad on Saturday, Brigadier General Esmaeil Qa’ani, commander of the Quds Force of the Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC), said that his unit will continue to provide support for the young Palestinian resistance forces and their “strong heroic front” to the greatest extent possible, both in words and in practice.

-- Minister: INOTEX Props Up Developing Startup Markets
Iran’s Minister of Interior Ahmad Vahidi has said that development of startup and knowledge-based companies’ markets in international arenas is among the outcomes of holding the International Innovation and Technology Exhibition (INOTEX).
Speaking on the sidelines of the 12th edition of teh expo (INOTEX 2023), Vahidi stated that the exhibition will encourage Small- and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs) to take advantage of the world’s latest technologies.
-- German Scholar of Iranian Studies Passes Away
Noted German-American writer and scholar of Islamic history and Iranian studies Wilferd Ferdinand Madelung has passed away at the age of 92. He had been granted the Farabi International Award by Iran’s Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance in 2013 for his significant contributions to Islamic and Iranian studies.
Born in Stuttgart on December 26, 1930, Madelung accompanied his parents to the U.S. where his father, Georg Hans Madelung, continued his career as an aeronautic engineer specializing in rockets after World War II.
-- ‘Count to 10’ Nominated for Award at UK Festival
Iranian feature film ‘Count to 10’ has been nominated for an award at the Playback International Film Festival (PIFF) in the UK. The film’s director, Farid Valizadeh was named as a candidate to receive the Best Director award at the 4th edition of the British fest.
‘Count to 10’ narrates the events that happen few hours into the life story of a couple with a significant age difference. The two enter a race-like marathon to the number 10 on a path with a discourse challenge, and the loser in the marathon must accept the other party’s conditions, whatever they may be.

-- Life goes on without JCPOA: MP
An Iranian lawmaker has said that Iran has learned how to live without the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, officially called the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). The lawmaker, Morteza Mahmoudvand, who is a member of the Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, made the remarks on the occasion of the anniversary of the U.S. withdrawal from the JCPOA.
“The main problem of the West with Iran is the development of knowledge, independence and elimination of dependence,” he said in remarks to ICANA. “According to nuclear specialists, today we have reached a stage where we have the entire cycle of nuclear knowledge in the country, and this issue has angered the Arrogance.”
-- Budget to support patients with rare diseases rises by 40%
The budget allocated to support patients with rare diseases has increased by 40 percent. A sum of 50 trillion rials (about $100 million) was allocated in the past Iranian calendar year that ended on March 20, IRNA reported, adding that the figure rose to 70 trillion rials this year.
According to the statistics published in 2019, the number of rare diseases identified in Iran has reached 332 types of diseases, and about 4,750 people are covered by the Rare Diseases Foundation of Iran.
-- Iran tourism to reap reward if Ecbatana gains UNESCO status, governor-general says
Hamedan’s Governor-General has said the UNESCO designation of Ecbatana will be providing a great opportunity for Iran’s tourism sector. “The UNESCO registration of the Hegmataneh ensemble will provide an unparalleled opportunity not only for Hamedan but for the whole tourism sector of Iran,” Moslem Makhfi said on Thursday.
Known in classical times as Ecbatana, the ensemble, which partly overlaps with modern Hamedan, was once one of the world’s greatest cities of ancient times.
