Phelan, a Paris-based travel consultant, was arrested in October and was held in a prison in Mashhad, northeastern Iran. He was released on Thursday.
Given that Phelan, 64, had entered Iran with a French passport, his case was pursued by the French Embassy in Tehran. In the meantime, Irish diplomats based in Iran were also given consular access to his case several times.
Throughout his detention, Phelan was in contact with his family by phone and, based on the Vienna Convention, benefited from all consular support and services.
However, the Western media published baseless reports that Phelan's life was at risk due to a heart problem and that he was held at sub-zero temperatures.
The Irish Times reported on March 8 that Phelan had been arrested on groundless charges and taken hostage in a geopolitical game. It also claimed that Phelan was facing the risk of death and would not last long in prison.
So far, the Iranian Embassy in Ireland issued several statements underlying the facts about Phalen’s case. On March 24, The Embassy stated that Phelan was receiving the necessary medical services and was receiving treatment according to the physicians’ prescription.
Iranian Embassy in Ireland also said that the rumors about his inhumane and non-standard conditions were all baseless and politically motivated.
The Iranian Embassy in Ireland was also in contact with Phelan's father and assured him that Iran spared no effort to help his son in the fields of medical, consular, and humanitarian arenas.
