Addressing an international drug control conference in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad on Tuesday, Eskandar Momeni, secretary general of Iran’s Drug Control Headquarters, said that 27% of heroin seizures and 59% of morphine seizures in the world were also carried out by Iran in 2020, citing latest information from the United Nations office on drugs and crime.
He added that Iran accounted for 80% of methamphetamine seizures in the Middle East and Southwest Asia in the same year.
Despite its considerable success in the fight against drug trafficking, the official said, Iran still faces “multiple challenges” in this area because of the “cruel and unilateral” sanctions imposed on the country by the United States and its European allies.
However, Momeni underscored Iran's unwavering commitment to continuing its “humanitarian mission” of battling drug trafficking.
