Iran FM to attend next Syria meeting in Russia: Spokesman

Tehran, IRNA – Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian will participate in the forthcoming quadrilateral meeting on Syria to be held in Russia, spokesman Nasser Kanaani said.

Speaking at his regular weekly presser on Monday, Kanaani said good progress has been made and good processes were formed during previous discussions on the Syria issue.

The Iranian foreign minister will participate in the next round, which will be held on May 10, he said.

“Iran has always emphasized during these quadrilateral meetings that while understanding Turkey’s security concerns in Syria, we believe that these issues have no military solution,” he added.

Kanaani also pointed to the recent rapprochement between Syria and Arab countries, saying it was “another victory” that Iran welcomes.

“The Arab governments made it possible for Syria to attend the meeting of the Arab League, which we welcome, and we hope that the countries of the region will be able to take a new path in the region.”

After more than a decade of suspension, the Arab League on Sunday readmitted Syria, saying Damascus could resume its participation in the organization’s meetings immediately.

Syria’s membership in the Arab League was suspended in 2011 when a foreign-backed insurgency erupted in the Arab country. Several Arab countries severed their diplomatic relations with Syria and supported militants seeking to oust President Bashar al-Assad.

Iran will respond decisively to any aggression

Kanaani, responding to US national security advisor Jake Sullivan’s recent anti-Iran remarks, said that such comments on Iran’s nuclear program contradict 15 reports of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) which certified the peaceful nature of Tehran’s nuclear activities.

He said the US is responsible for the Zionist regime’s nuclear activities as well as its acts of aggression targeting Iran’s nuclear sites. “This is while our activities have always been peaceful, and we do not accept baseless claims,” he added.

The spokesman asserted that Iran will not tolerate any act of aggression and will respond decisively and in a way that will make the aggressor regret its action.

Iranian, Azerbaijani nations enjoy ‘unbreakable relations’

Asked about the expulsion of four Azerbaijani diplomats from Iran, he confirmed the news, saying it came in response to Azerbaijan’s “non-constructive action” to expel four Iranian diplomats.

“We have always expressed our views on relations with the Republic of Azerbaijan clearly and transparently,” he said, in reaction to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev’s recent remarks.

“The relations between the two nations are unbreakable, and we should not take any action that is not in the interests of the two countries but is in the interest of the parties who want to harm those relations,” he added.

Joint victory celebration against terrorism

Answering a question regarding President Ebrahim Raisi’s trip to Syria, the spokesman said that the visit was a joint victory celebration against terrorism and that the president held talks with Syrian people and thinkers as well as resistance leaders, which is a sign of Iran’s support for the resistance axis in the region.

Kanaani also explained the trip as an effort to direct new relationships in the post-terrorism era as well as to pursue the expansion of trade and economic exchanges, so the Syrian and Iranian presidents signed important documents, which can pave the ground for improving private sectors in both countries, adding that the Comprehensive Program of Strategic and Long-Term Cooperation between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Syrian Arab Republic can regulate economic ties between the two nations.

Iran firm to resolve misunderstandings with IAEA

Kanaani pointed to certain reports on the installation of new cameras by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), saying that the Islamic Republic firmly pursues the policy of resolving problems and misunderstandings with the IAEA and that Tehran’s policy is based on preventing the turning of the issues relating to Iran’s peaceful nuclear energy activities into an obstacle.

Iraq-Iran mutual understanding on security issues

On the security document signed between Baghdad and Tehran earlier this year, the spokesman said that Iran has determined a clear framework to meet its security requirements and, based on the signed agreement, expects the path to be taken seriously.

As previously declared, being a refugee cannot justify the presence of armed terrorists on Iraqi soil, he said, noting that Iran hopes the mutual understanding between the Iraqi and Iranian officials would help follow up on security issues.

IRAN EXPO 2023 important for Foreign Ministry
The fifth exhibition of export capabilities of the Islamic Republic of Iran (IRAN EXPO 2023) is of great importance to the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Kanaani said, stressing that 750 companies have showcased their achievements in the event.

Saying that Iran’s various capacities in medical industrial and machinery fields were showcased at IRAN EXPO 2023, he hoped for the event to help find a suitable market for the Iranian export items.

Inked documents good initiative

Kanaani referred to the documents signed between Iran and other countries, including Russia and China, noting that the documents are fine initiatives, which can help determine friendly partners and direct preplanned goals in the correct path.

Beijing and Tehran have determined practical steps to implement the Iran-China 25-year Cooperation Program, but Iran’s 20-year agreement with Russia has not been finalized yet although the two countries are working on it, the spokesman said.

As to Syria and African states, he argued that the Tehran-Damascus agreement is being prepared and that good efforts have been made for relations with Africa as well, he said, adding that some trips have been planned at the level of high-ranking Iranian officials, including President Raisi to Africa.

No limitation for Iran-KSA businessmen
In response to a question with regard to the opening of Iranian and Saudi diplomatic missions, Kanaani said the buildings are in the final stage of renovation.

Based on the agreement between Iran and Saudi Arabia, there is no limitation for the Iranian and Saudi businessmen, he stated.

Touching upon Baghdad’s mediation to help Tehran-Cairo ties resume, he said that Tehran has announced that there are no limits to the expansion of regional relations.
