Tehran, IRNA – The following headlines appeared in English-language newspapers in the Iranian capital on Monday, May 8, 2023:

--- Iran achieves record-breaking milestone in oil, gas output

Iran has accomplished an unprecedented feat in its oil and natural gas production, reaching a daily oil output of over three million barrels per day and a daily natural gas extraction of more than one billion cubic meters within just twenty months. This impressive milestone is due to the Iranian government’s efforts in doubling its oil exports from the nation.
During the previous Iranian year that ended on March 20, 2023, Iran exported 83 million barrels of oil, which is 190 million barrels more than the figure for the year that ended in March 2021. It is expected that Iran will set a new record in oil exports this year, with the current government achieving a new high in oil exports compared to the past two years. This has led to an influx of petrodollars into the NIMA system, as well as the new trading system.

-- Iranian women win historic Asian ice hockey silver

Iran suffered a 3-1 defeat against the defending champion and host, Thailand, and settled for the runner-up spot at the 2023 Ice Hockey Women’s Asia and Oceania Championship in Bangkok.
Supitsara Thamma got the home side off the mark two minutes into the contest, only to see her goal canceled out by Zahra Rezaei in the second period.
Thipwarintorn Yannakornthanpunt restored Thailand’s lead in the 42nd minute, before sealing the victory with five minutes left on the clock. The result will still go down as a precious achievement for the Iranian women, who made it to the final showdown on their debut at the competition, grabbing a first-ever medal for the country in the women’s team sports in the continent.

-- Iran MP calls for preserving Shiraz’s historical fabric

A member of the Iranian Parliament has dismissed concerns about likely damage to historical sectors of Shiraz in the wake of a project to develop a shrine in the city.    
“The implementation of a project to expand the Shah Cheragh Shrine will not inflict any harm to precious historical monuments, including a house attributed to Sa’adi,” Alireza Pakfetrat told Iran Daily in an exclusive interview.
Abu-Muhammad Muslih al-Din bin Abdallah Shirazi, known by his penname Sa’adi, is a renowned Persian poet who lived in the 13th century.  Sa’adi’s tomb is also located in his hometown Shiraz, in Fars Province.

-- Iranian Author Shortlisted for Commonwealth Prize 

Iranian author Mehdi M. Kashani from Toronto has been shortlisted for the‎ prestigious Commonwealth Short Story Prize for his story ‘So Long, Gregor’ along with ‎Canadian writer Trevor Corkum.‎

‘So Long, Gregor’ is about a divorced father who seizes every opportunity to bond with his young son, even if it involves trapping a cockroach and calling it Gregor Samsa. However, the story reveals that the Kafkaesque amusement doesn’t appeal to everyone. Trevor Corkum has also been shortlisted for the prize for his story Lost Boys.

--- Speaker  Denies Some MPs Received SUVs

Iranian parliament speaker Muhammad-Baqer Qalibaf denied Sunday allegations that a number of lawmakers received luxury SUVs to take back their votes for the impeachment of the former minister of industry, mines, and trade.

Qalibaf said the parliament’s Security and the Representatives’ Behavior Monitoring Board had looked into the allegations and concluded that claims about the link between the SUVs and the impeachment vote were purely false. But he added that relevant authorities had been notified to investigate the offering of the vehicles.

-- Qatar-Iran Trade Grew 45% in 2022

The chairman of the Iran-Qatar Joint Chamber of Commerce Adnan Mousapour said on Sunday that the volume of trade exchanges between the two countries registered a 45 percent hike in 2022, compared to a year earlier.
Adnan Mousapour made the comment on the sidelines of the 5th edition of the Export Potential Exhibition of the Islamic Republic of Iran entitled “Iran Expo 2023”, adding that Qatari merchants and traders will visit the expo to see the achievements of Iranian companies.

-- Senior Iranian general visits Oman

The Sultanate of Oman hosted a visit by Iran’s top military official for talks on bilateral and regional cooperation. Major General Mohammad Hossein Baqeri, Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, headed a top military delegation to Muscat at the request of his Omani counterpart.

Upon his arrival, the top Iranian commander started talks with Oman’s senior military officials. He was also expected to meet the host country’s political officials.

-- Bust of Persian lexicographer Mohammad Moin unveiled in Tehran

 A bust of the Persian lexicographer Mohammad Moin was unveiled on Friday at the Moin Home and Museum in Tehran. The bronze bust was created by Hadi Arefi to be set up at the site to celebrate Moin’s 105th birthday. 

The celebration was held by Municipality District 14, where the Moin Home and Museum is located, the Iran House of Music, and the Iran Calligraphers Association. Moin’s daughter, Mahdokht, who is also a Persian literature professor at Allameh Tabatabai University, shared fond memories from the past.

--  29 Iranian universities in THE World University Rankings 2023

The Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2023 has placed 29 Iranian institutions among the world’s top 1,000 universities, ranking the country fourth in Asia after China, India, and Japan. Countries such as Saudi Arabia (18), South Korea (18), Taiwan (16), Russia (15), Switzerland (15), Pakistan (14), Netherlands (13), Egypt (13), Finland (12), Belgium (12), and Sweden (11) follow Irn in the ranking.

The United States (154), the United Kingdom (94), China (59), Italy (49), Germany (49), Australia (44), India (38), Spain (36), France (36), Japan (33), and Canada (32) ranked first to eleventh.
