World's silence on Palestinian's martyrdom in jail to embolden Zionists: Iran

Tehran, IRNA - Iran has called the martyrdom of Palestinian hunger striker Khader Adnan in an Israeli jail as a clear example of crimes against humanity, warning that the silence of the international community on the case will only embolden the apartheid regime of Israel.

“The manner in which the Zionist regime detained and inhumanely treated this Palestinian citizen is a clear example of the inhumane and violent behavior that the Zionist regime has used against the Palestinian nation and fighters over the past seven decades,” Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanani said in a statement on Tuesday.

“This is a clear example of crimes against humanity,” he noted. “The silence of the international community and human rights organization will make the Zionist apartheid regime more emboldened.”

Khader Adnan, a senior leader of the Islamic Jihad movement, was detained on February 5 and immediately launched a hunger strike in protest at his illegal detention. His health rapidly deteriorated in jail, marked by severe weakness, loss of consciousness, vomiting of blood and difficulty speaking. He passed away early Tuesday, on day 87 of his hunger strike.

Adnan had been arrested more than a dozen times by Israeli forces for standing up against the Zionist regime’s occupation and aggression, spending a total of eight years in Israeli prisons.  He had gone on hunger strike four times in the past, the longest of which lasted 67 days in 2012 and resulted in his release.

Kanani extended his condolences to the family of the martyr, the Palestinian nation and the resistance front.
