Workers have been the focus of attention due to the importance of their presence in various economic fields as well as because of the size of their influential population.
Since before the Islamic Revolution of 1979 until the present day, violent left-wing groups and movements have claimed they support the proletariat based on communist and Marxist traditions. However, by reviewing these groups’ records over the past decades, especially what they did in the turbulent 1980s, one can see how workers have been targeted in a way that they have become one of main groups in the Iranian society that have fallen victim to the violent and bloody acts of terrorist groups.
It is noteworthy that a significant number of assassinations targeting Iranian workers were carried out by the same leftist groups that claimed to have supported the workers. According to available statistics, since the victory of the Islamic Revolution until early 2010s, a total of 1628 workers have been killed by terrorist groups. Some 228 of these workers were people under the age of 18 and 1,134 had primary education or were illiterate. The age and educational level of these people clearly show that they were ordinary citizens of the society and had no political, party or group affiliations. Over 400 of these victims were assassinated by left-wing groups that normally claim to support workers more than other groups.
What is more surprising is that more than 250 workers in Iran have been assassinated by the Mujahedin-e Khalq (MEK) terrorist group. Interestingly enough, despite the considerable amount of crimes the MEK has committed against the working class in Iran, the group is still trying to pretend itself as a supporter of workers in the country.
It has been clear for several decades that followers of Marx were never good defenders of workers and their rights. For them, workers were a tool to advance their political goals and to gain the support of the masses. The large number of workers assassinated by these groups in the 1980s shows that it doesn’t matter to these terrorists groups whether their targets are among the weaker sections of the society because they only care about pursuing their totalitarian goals. Based on this, there is no difference between radical leftist group and Marxist regimes in the way they treat the workers.
For Iranians, May 1 is not simply a day to honor workers because it also reminds them of the memories of hundreds of workers who were unjustly killed by violent terrorist groups over the past decades.
