Ayatollah Abbasali Soleimani, a former Friday prayer leader of Zahedan, in southeast Iran, was shot and killed by a gunman in one of Babolsar’s banks earlier today, said Ruhollah Solgi, deputy governor of Mazandaran province.
The assailant was immediately arrested by security forces, Solgi said, adding that he is being interrogated.
He added that the motive of the gunman is not clear yet, adding that the public will be informed as soon as the issue is clarified.
Soleimani has served as a member of Iran's Assembly of Experts. He has also served as representative of Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei and Friday prayer leader of the city of Kashan, in central Iran.
