Court finds US guilty of role in 2017 terrorist attacks in Iran

Tehran, IRNA – A court in Iran has ruled that the US government, as well as some American institutions and officials, must pay some $312 million in damages to families of the victims of 2017 terrorist attacks in Tehran.

According to a Wednesday statement by the Iranian judiciary’s international affairs and human rights department, the 55th branch of the Tehran Court of Justice had arrived at the verdict within the framework of taking reciprocal action against the US government and based on the legal actions taken by the families of the victims.

Under the ruling, the US government, as well as some American institutions and officials, must pay $312.950 as “material, spiritual and punitive damages” to victim families.

On June 7, 2017, the Iranian Parliament building and the Mausoleum of Imam Khomeini were targeted in two simultaneous terrorist attacks, leaving 17 civilians dead and 43 others wounded. The Daesh terrorist group claimed responsibility for the attacks.

The judiciary also said that the ruling aims to prevent further US violations of international law, including its support for terrorist attacks committed by Daesh terrorists.

According to the court’s verdict, the damages granted in the case included $9.950 in material damages, some $104 million in moral damages caused to the plaintiffs, and another $199 million in punitive damages.
