“All of our armed forces-- including ground, air, air defense, and naval forces—are equipped with drones,” Brigadier General Afshin Khajeh Fard said Monday at a joint meeting of the University of Command and Staff.
“Our drones have been tested and have demonstrated their unique capabilities in various field exercises and real combat zones. This is one of the reasons why our drones are sought after by the rest of the world,” he added.
Gen. Khajeh Fard noted that the IAIO, an organization responsible for planning and managing Iran's military aviation industry, is running a host of military and defense programs to “boost the deterrent power” of the country.
Praising Iran’s self-sufficiency in the defense sector, the general said many countries are meeting their defense requirements by purchasing advanced weaponry, but Iran has been “restoring, maintaining and reconstructing” its own military equipment since the 1980-88 war with Iraq, primarily because of the Western sanctions.
Iran’s armed forces boast a broad range of domestically-manufactured unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), designed for combat and reconnaissance missions.
Last week, the Iranian Army received 200 strategic drones, equipped with missiles and electronic warfare systems. The UAVs were delivered to the army as part of a deal with the Defense Ministry to enhance the country’s combat readiness.
