Iranian Navy forces US nuclear submarine to surface in Persian Gulf

Tehran, IRNA – Commander of the Iranian Navy Rear Admiral Shahram Irani has given new details about a warning issued by the Iranian naval forces to a US nuclear-powered submarine in the strategic Strait of Hormuz for the vessel to surface and change its direction.

Irani told Iran's state TV on Thursday that the US submarine, while submerged, was approaching the Strait of Hormuz where it was detected by Iran’s domestically-made and fully indigenous Fateh Submarine, adding that Fateh had conducted maneuvers to force the American submarine to surface and to travel through the strait while on the surface.

The American submarine was approaching Iran’s territorial waters, the military commander said, adding that the vessel – which he identified as "Florida" nuclear submarine – changed its path while being escorted.

"This submarine, using all its modern-day capacities, was doing its best to pass through the Strait of Hormuz in total silence when it was detected by Fateh Submarine,” Irani said.

He called for an explanation from the US authorities as to why they had breached international maritime laws in such a crucial waterway, warning them that, from now on, they should abide by theirf international regulations.
