“The volume of transit in the region was $222 million in 1400 (Iranian calendar), and it reached $384 million in 1401,” Ali Navid, the AFZ’s deputy director for economic and investment affairs, said on Tuesday.
Data showed Iranian exports through the border region also rose by 110% to hit $147 million last calendar year, up from $70 million reported in the year before. Overall, the AFZ boasted a positive trade balance of $172 million last calendar year.
Turkiye, Russia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Iraq, Georgia, Morocco, Kazakhstan, and Turkmenistan were among the AFZ’s top export destinations.
The industrial production of the region grew by 10% last year to reach 190,000 metric tons (mt) in the year to March, compared to about 172,000 mt in the year before. Its agricultural output also rose from 118,000 mt to 133,000 mt during the same period.
Covering an area of 51,000 hectares, the Aras zone is located some 137 kilometers north of the Iranian city of Tabriz at the border point with Azerbaijan and near the border with Armenia.
