According to the estimates, it is expected that between 8 and 8.5 million tons of guaranteed wheat yields will be purchased from the total wheat cultivation area of the country, the head of wheat farming of the agriculture ministry Sohrab Sohrabi said on Saturday.
Sohrabi said the total irrigated wheat cultivation area under contract has reached 1.55 million hectares this year, from 250,000 hectares last year, showing a 6-fold increase.
In the current year, Iran’s irrigated wheat cultivation area is 1.99 million hectares, and the rainfed wheat cultivation area is 3.96 million hectares, making a total of 5.95 hectares, he explained.
The total wheat needs of the country include 10 million tons for bakeries, two million tons for trade and industry, 1.2 million tons for seeds, and 300,000 tons for other uses, he said.
The official added that the country’s total need for wheat yields is 12.5 million tons annually.
