Afroogh who was suffering from cancer died early on Friday (April 14).
About three decades ago, when studying for his Ph.D., Afroogh was introduced as an exemplary student.
Born in Shiraz, the capital city of the southern Iranian province of Fars, this well-known figure was the chairman of the Majlis (Parliament) cultural commission when he was an MP (2004–2008).
He was also a faculty memeber of Tarbiat Modares University and the Institute for Humanities and Cultural Studies.
About 47 years ago, Afroogh entered the University of Salford in England to study sociology, but he was arrested after four years for holding a demonstration in protest to the US Police's behavior towards Muslim Iranian students.
Then, he was imprisoned and deported to Iran after being prosecuted five times.
His funeral ceremony will be held in Tehran within the next few days.
Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi has expressed condolences over the death of Afroogh, describing the prominent sociologist as an elite author and intellectual.
