Governor of Iran’s West Azerbaijan province Mohammad Sadegh Motamedian said on Thursday that the level of water in Lake Urmia could reach above two billion cubic meters within the next 24 hours.
Motamedian, who also serves as the secretary of the National Taskforce for Revival of Lake Urmia, made the announcement after he toured newly-opened water transfer facilities located near the lake.
He said the amount of water being supplied from the Kani Sib Dam via a 42-kilometer tunnel and canal system to Lake Urmia had reached 35 cubic meters per second.
Iran has spent heavily on infrastructure projects in recent years to prevent Lake Urmia, Iran’s largest salt lake, from drying up.
