‘Iran needs to play active role in global ocean protection programs’

Tehran, IRNA – Chairman of the Iranian National Institute for Oceanography and Atmospheric Science (INIOAS) says the country needs to play a more active role in global efforts and plans that are aimed at protecting the oceans.

“Given the territorial access of the Islamic Republic of Iran to international waters and particularly to the Indian Ocean, which is regarded as the ocean of the future … the country is expected to pay special attention to its territorial potentials and sensitivities,” said Morteza Tavakoli on Tuesday.

Tavakoli said such special position requires Iran to play a more active role in global programs to protect the oceans.

The official made the remarks after attending the 27th Session of the International Oceanographic Data and Information Exchange (IODE) Committee at the headquarters of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in Paris, France, in late March where he clarified Iran’s position with regards to latest developments in the field.

The International Oceanographic Data and Information Exchange program affiliated to the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) was established in 1961 with the aim of improving maritime and oceanic researches, exploitation and development via exchange of data between UN member states.
