60 states highlight role of religions in promoting human rights

London, IRNA – Some 60 countries, including member states of the Islamic Cooperation Organization (OIC), underlined the role of religions in promoting and upgrading human rights in the world and international organizations.

The mentioned countries supported a statement proposed by Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran to United Nations and other international organizations in Geneva Ali Bahreini in the 52nd summit of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Switzerland.

According to the statement, the religious tenets and values such as human dignity, equality, justice and peace are the sources of norms related to the contemporary human rights.

The advocates of the statement believe that lack of respecting cultural diversity can lead to unilateralism, extremism and violence; so, they urged the international community to adopt measures needed to stop any sort of discrimination, hostility, violence, offense and insult to religions and their followers.

They also urged the UNHRC to stand against negative cliché against religions and religious figures, and use the capacities of the religious leaders in upgrading human rights.

The 60 advocates of the statement welcomed meaningful dialogue among different religions, including in the framework of human rights mechanisms.

The statement was initiated by Iran’s representative office in Geneva to promote the role of religion in maintaining and upgrading human rights.
