Iran: Relations with Iraq must not be influenced by Kurdistan region's events

Baghdad, IRNA – The head of the Iranian Parliament's National Security and Foreign Relations Commission said here on Tuesday Iran does not want its relations with Iraq to be influenced by Iraqi Kurdistan Region events, just as the presence of grouplets along the Iraqi border with Iran is unacceptable.

Vahid Jalalzadeh in his meeting with Iraq Prime Minster Fuad Hussain referred to the religious and cultural backgrounds of the two nations, the ups and downs of the past years, and said that the relations between the two countries are good and satisfactory.

He voiced satisfaction about the establishment of a powerful government in Iraq, reiterating, "The Islamic Republic of Iran always supports an advanced and stable Iraq."

Jalalzadeh who is the representative of Orumiyeh in Parliament appreciated Iraq's hosting for five rounds of Iran-Saudi negotiations and the role that the Iraqi government has played in the restoration of Tehran-Riyadh relations, arguing, "Iran is both happy with Iraq's mediations in this development and welcomes it."

He referred to the good and still developing bilateral ties, asking for stronger support from the Iraqi government for the bilateral security agreement on the central Iraqi government's stronger presence in Iraqi Kurdistan Region.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran does not want the events in Kurdistan Region to overshadow our relations, and meanwhile, Iran cannot tolerate the presence of any kind of grouplets along Iraq's borders with Iran," said Jalalzadeh.

The Iraqi prime minister, too, welcomed the Iranian parliamentary delegation's presence in Iraq and the 5th Iran-Iraq Joint Economic Commission session, and referring to the historical and religious backgrounds of Iran and Iraq said that the relations between the two neighboring countries are below the expected level, adding that he will do all his best to further improve bilateral relations to a much higher level.

The Iraqi prime minister also expressed delight over the restored Iran-Saudi relations, adding that Iraq is also ready to do the same thing between Iran and other regional countries.

Fuad Hussain said that in his talks with the Iraqi Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Nechrivan Barzani, too, he realized that the region, too, does not want Iraq's relations with Iran to be harmed.

He also expressed hope that the Iran-Iraq security agreement would be implemented soon, and its practical effects on bilateral ties would be seen on both sides as soon a possible.
