Iran, Pakistan to boost electricity trade to 200 MW: Minister

Tehran, IRNA – Iranian Minister of Energy Ali Akbar Mehrabian says that the amount of electricity trade between Iran and Pakistan will increase to reach 200 megawatts (MW).

Mehrabian made the remarks in a Sunday meeting with visiting Pakistani Energy Minister Khurram Dastgir Khan in Tehran.

During the meeting, Mehrabian hailed economic cooperation between Iran and Pakistan and added that that the value of bilateral trade between the two neighbors had reached $2 billion per year.

He also referred to the launch of a new electricity transmission line between the two countries in less than a year and added that the line became operational after necessary tests were carried out on the two sides of the border.

Mehrabian said a new agreement will allow the annual volume of electricity trade between Iran and Pakistan to increase to 200 MW.

Dastgir Khan, for his part, emphasized the necessity for developing and deepening relations between Iran and Pakistan while expressing hope that the two countries will further expand their electricity trade.

Dastgir Khan said that relations between the two neighbors are beyond regional and international issues as they enjoy strong cultural, historical and geographical commonalities.

According to IRNA, Iran and Pakistan signed a first electricity trade agreement in 2002 for trading up to 34 MW of power. The volume then increased to 74 MW before reaching 100 MW in recent years.
