Iran national basketball team qualified for 2023 World Cup

Tehran, IRNA – Iran national basketball team has qualified for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 following Australia’s defeating Kazakhstan.

The 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup will be the 19th tournament of the FIBA Basketball World Cup for men's national basketball teams, which is slated for August 25 to September 10.

The 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup qualification process determines 30 out of 32 teams to compete in the coming event. The other two teams are the Philippines and Japan, who as co-hosts got an automatic qualification for the tournament.

Iranian basketball athletes coached by Saeed Armaghani lost the game to Japan, so the Iranians’ qualification was decided in the match between Kazakhstan and Australia.

The Iranians also lost their last match to China 86 to 74 on Sunday, but Australia’s victory over Kazakhstan paved the way for Iran to be qualified for the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup.

Earlier basketball teams from China, Australia, and Japan qualified for the tournament, so Iran is the fourth team to take part in the event, which is scheduled to be held in three countries of Japan, the Philippines, and Indonesia.

Iran's national basketball team has contested in all rounds of FIBA basketball world cups since 2010.
