There is no legal grounds to blacklist IRGC: Germany

Tehran, IRNA – German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has acknowledged that Germany’s experts have not found any legal reason to blacklist the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization.

On Monday, the European Union imposed new sanctions on some Iranian officials and entities to further support the recent unrest in the Islamic Republic.

The new embargo targets 32 individuals and two organizations, including the culture and Islamic guidance minister, the education minister as well as other politicians and officials. The latest embargo brings the total number of sanctioned people and entities in Iran to 196 individuals and 33 organizations.

Nevertheless, the bloc concluded that they would not label the IRGC as a so-called terrorist group.

German foreign minister said following the summit in Brussels, "As of now, we don't have legal grounds in the EU to list the [IRGC] as terrorist organization."

Josep Borrell, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, said on January 23 that blacklisting the IRGC as a terrorist group requires a European country’s court ruling.

Iran has time and again warned the West against the aftermaths of their interfering behaviors, stressing that such measures will not remain unanswered.

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Nasser Kanaani emphasized that such acts against the Islamic Republic are unconstructive and contrary to the UN Charter as well as international mechanisms.
