Iran urges intl. community to help stop cruel US sanctions

London, IRNA – Iran’s Representative Office to the European Union on Wednesday called on the international community to put aside its passive stance towards “cruel” US sanctions against the Iranian nation and take a more active role to halt “the illegal process” and help protect international order.

The office made the call during a video clip it posted on social media platform Twitter.

In its video, the Iranian Representative Office criticized media and the international community for being indifferent towards the inhumane repercussions of the US sanctions against the Iranian people.

“Washington defines sanctions as a non-military tool in its foreign policy. But the reality is something else. Sanctions target all aspects of life, like a blind military attack. They affect social, political and economic conditions of the society.”

The Iranian office also said that the sanctions destroy financial mechanisms needed for transactions related to humanitarian work, adding that the so-called humanitarian exemptions placed by American officials are just a cover-up for “inhumane and unethical” measures.

As an example, the office mentioned the case of epidermolysis bullosa (EB) patients known as butterfly children who have lost access to their medicines due to sanctions imposed by former US president Donald Trump and intensified by his successor, incumbent Joe Biden.

The Iranian Representative Office to the EU called on the international community not to play possum on the “silent killing” of Iranians by the US sanctions and stop this illegal process.

“Media should also break their silence and report on the destructive impacts of the sanctions. It is now time for action”, the office said.

The United States, following its 2018 withdrawal from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal reinstated sanctions on the Islamic Republic that had been lifted under the accord. Washington also launched its “maximum pressure” campaign, imposing more sanctions on Tehran.
