Pakistan, Iran open 5th border crossing

Zahedan, IRNA – Pakistan and Iran have opened their fifth border crossing in the Iranian border county of Saravan, Sistan and Baluchestan Province.

Mobin Ali Mir, the director of border markets in Sistan and Baluchestan Province, told IRNA on Wednesday that the border crossing had been established with the aim of enhancing unity and supporting job creation as well as maintaining security.

The Saravan border crossing is expected to help boost economic exchanges in the borderline, the director said, noting that people living in border areas of both countries are Muslims and brothers, and they can economically assist each other via export and import of goods.

According to the official, Sistan and Baluchestan Province can play a key role in trade, foreign transit, and border exchanges thanks to its geographical situation, because it has borderlines with both Pakistan and Afghanistan to the east. The province has also access to international waters to the south.

Sistan and Baluchestan Province possesses about 1,600 kilometers of borderlines with Afghanistan, Pakistan, and the Sea of Oman, so the Iranian province is one of the safest and easiest paths that can link Afghanistan and Pakistan to the Middle East, Europe, and Africa.

The province also has a special strategic and transit position, which is of great importance, especially due to the fact that Chabahar is the only ocean port in Iran.

Zahedan, the capital city of Sistan and Baluchestan Province, is scheduled to be connected to Iran’s national railway, which can play a key role in the development of the western parts of the country.
