Raisi trip to Beijing to consolidate China-Iran ties: Global Times

Tehran, IRNA – English-language Chinese newspaper Global Times has said that this week’s visit by Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi to Beijing will deepen the long-running relationship and friendship between Iran and China.

In a Monday article, the Global Times said that the Iranian chief executive is scheduled to travel to China on an official visit invited by his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping to tour Beijing from Tuesday to Thursday.

Political analysts are of the opinion that Raisi’s visit to Beijing will boost the implementation of the strategic partnership between the two countries and it shows the Raisi administration’s determination to push ahead with the Look East policy.

"Iran's 'Look to the East' policy meant the transition from its policy of negative balancing and non-alignment to building alliances with non-western world powers that have similar political structures to Iran, such as Russia and China."

Tang Zhichao, a Middle East analyst at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, told the Global Times on Sunday that the top priority of President Raisi's visit should be to develop the China-Iran comprehensive strategic partnership and push forward the 25-year cooperation agreement and accelerate the implementation of the deal.

Iran and China enjoy strong economic ties, especially in energy, transit, agriculture, trade, and investment fields. The two states signed the 25-Year Iran-China Strategic Agreement in 2021, which consists of political, economic, and strategic cooperation.

According to Global Times, Raisi told Chinese Vice Premier Hu Chunhua in Tehran in December 2022 that Iran will remain committed to deepening the strategic partnership with China away from regional and international developments.

"The key point of Raisi's visit is to push forward the process, because it is beneficial to the people of both sides, Tang stressed."

Political experts believe that China and Iran have different bilateral and international issues to discuss, including developments in Afghanistan, regional affairs, climate change, security, and energy cooperation.

Zhu Yongbiao, the executive director of the Research Center for the Belt and Road at Lanzhou University, told the Global Times, "This visit can be seen as a very important upgrade in China-Iran relations."

Zhu went on to say that the mutual cooperation under the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization will give China and Iran more space for cooperation. It is foreseeable that after this meeting, China-Iran relations will enter a new and higher stage, he added.
