Turkmenistan, Iran discuss border, consular cooperation

Tehran, IRNA – Deputy foreign ministers of Turkmenistan and Iran have held talks on consular issues such as visas, prisoners, law enforcement, legal and border collaborations as well as customs affairs.

The 15th joint consular commission on border and customs issues was held in Turkmenistan’s capital city Ashgabat on February 6, which was headed by Consular Deputy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Parliament and Iranians Affairs Ali-Reza Bigdeli and Turkmenistan’s Deputy Foreign Minister Vepa Hajiyev.

The two sides discussed consular issues, including visa issuance, prisoners swap, law enforcement cooperation, legal and border coordination, as well as customs-related matters.

At the end of the 15th joint consular commission on border and customs issues, the heads of the two delegations signed a memorandum of understanding.

Also, Iran’s deputy foreign minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Raşit Meredow held a meeting in Ashgabat to discuss issues of mutual interests such as consular cooperation.

The two sides also expressed eagerness to expand the level of mutual ties and emphasized that the cultural commonalities between the two nations are considered an important feature in the bilateral relationship.

On his trip to Turkmenistan, Bigdeli visited the Bajgiran border market, Iran’s cultural consultation service in Ashgabat, the representative offices of IranKhodro Company and Bank Saderat of Iran in Turkmenistan as well as the Ashgabat National Museum of History.
