FM to Syrian counterpart: Iran ready to send aid to quake-hit areas

Tehran, IRNA – Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian on Monday announced his country’s readiness to help Syria in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake that hit the northern of the Arab country earlier in the day.

In a phone call with his Syrian counterpart Faisal Mekdad, Amirabdollahian expressed the Islamic Republic’s sympathy with the government and people of Syria.

The top Iranian diplomat also said that his country is ready to dispatch humanitarian aid to the quake-hit areas in Syria.

Mekdad expressed gratitude towards his Iranian counterpart, calling Iran and Syria two brotherly and friendly nations which always stand by each other in every situation.

He also briefed Amirabdollahian on the situation in the quake-stricken areas and the needs of people there.

The 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck northern Syria and southern Turkiye early on Monday.

It was followed by multiple strong aftershocks including a severe tremor measuring magnitude 7.5.  

At least 2,600 people have been confirmed dead in both countries.

The death toll continues to keep rising as search and rescue operations are still underway.
