Moisés Garduño, Ph.D. in Contemporary Arab and Islamic Studies from the Autonomous University of Madrid, said in an interview with Sputnik that Iran's presence in the Panama Canal will surely anger the United States, a country that will interpret the presence of the Iranian Navy as an affront to its security.
Speaking at the first national conference on maritime civilization in Konarak on January 11, Commander of IRI Navy Rear Admiral Shahram Irani called for a more powerful presence of the navy fleets in international waters, including the Panama Canal.
According to the Iranian navy commander, the Islamic Republic is not present in two strategic straits on the planet, but in the current year the Iranians plan to have a presence in one of them, which is the Panama Canal.
Based on the strategic way of thinking of the US, any type of Iranian presence in Latin American waters could be interpreted as aggression in strategic terms, the analyst noted.
The possible presence of Iran in Latin American waters would have a reason for the Iranians, because the Islamic Republic has experience in safeguarding containers, especially oil, in the Persian Gulf and the Red Sea, he said.
Tehran wants to cross the Panama Canal to convey the message that it is possible for the Islamic Republic to carry out patrol missions in the Latin American waters, Garduño went on to say.
As the US is focused on Ukraine, the Latin American countries need to approach other states such as China, Russia, and now Iran, he argued.
The American continent is seeking to find another way to promote co-existence when it comes to lack of hegemony, he said, noting that this is a sort of geopolitical realignment, so the rapprochement between Iran and the Latin American states is part of the re-realignment.
