Tehran, IRNA – The growing number of incidents of killing civilians in the United States in the hands of police officers undermines their mission and raises the question in mind if they are a law enforcement force or lethal force to wreak havoc against civilians.

A non-governmental organization, which monitors police violence in the US, reported that on average, the police officers in the country shoot down more than three people every day.

According to a new report, the US police hit a new record last year, when there were only 12 days in 2022 without the police killing civilians, and the number of murders by the US police stood at 1,176 cases in that year, which is the highest record from 2013.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) reported that the number of killings by police increased in 2022 in comparison to 2021 and 2020. Based on the statistics, the rate of such killings is about 6.9 out of every 100k American citizens, which is far more than reported murders in Haiti, Tanzania, and Afghanistan.

Amongst the most controversial cases of police brutality against African Americans, there are some names such as George Floyd, 46, and Cedric Lofton, 17, whose murders caused massive anger among the American citizens in particular the African American community.

However, the most recent case relates to uncontrolled violence by US police officers in the face of another African American named Tyre Nichols (29), who lost his life because of being punched, struck with a baton, kicked in the face, and sprayed with an irritant.

Following the release of video footage of the scene, where he was violently beaten because of careless driving, angry American people poured into streets in Memphis, Boston, Chicago, Detroit, New York City, Portland, Oregon, and Washington to show resentment to the violent and fatal behavior of police officers in the US.

US President Joe Biden, who is afraid of the American people’s wrath on Nichols’ case, urged the protesters to hold peaceful protests, noting that the anger is understandable, but violence is never acceptable.

Many US lawmakers issued statements to condemn the murder of Tyre Nichols.

Cerelyn J. Davis, Chief of Police for the Memphis Police Department, described the acts conducted by the police officers as heinous, reckless, and inhuman.
