Iran expresses concern over Brazil riots

Tehran, IRNA – Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman Nasser Kanaani on Monday expressed concern over riots in Brazil and attacks on government buildings there.

The Iranian official said that his country stresses the need for protecting stability and security in Brazil, as well as respect for the rule of law by the elected government in the Latin American nation.

On Sunday, supporters of Jair Bolsonaro, who lost presidential elections to his leftist rival Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in October 2022, stormed Brazil's congress in the capital Brasilia.

Bolsonaro’s supporters remained camped out on Monday.

The Justice Ministry said that more than 1,000 people were arrested during riots that broke out less than a week after Silva was sworn in as new president.

Bolsonaro refused to concede defeat and went to Florida, US, before Silva’s inauguration.
