Pakistan's new army chief urges more cooperation with Iran

Tehran, IRNA – Pakistan's new Army Chief Lieutenant General Asim Munir has called for increased cooperation with Iran, especially in the field of economy.

Munir made the statement in a Monday meeting with Iranian Ambassador to Pakistan Seyyed Mohammad Ali Hosseini at the headquarters of the Pakistan Army in Rawalpindi.

Iran's military attaché in Pakistan Colonel Mostafa Ghanbarpour was also present in the meeting.

During the meeting, Munir emphasized his country's support for Iran's positions in regional and global forums, especially in human rights debates and on the country’s peaceful nuclear program.

He said Iran and Pakistan can expand their cooperation relying on a history of friendly and fraternal ties between the two neighboring countries.

Hosseini, for his part, congratulated General Munir on his appointment as Pakistan's top army commander and offered him the warm greetings of the Chief of Staff of Iran’s Armed Forces Major General Mohammad Hossein Bagheri and Chief of the Iranian Army Major General Abdolrahim Mousavi.

The Iranian ambassador emphasized the importance of exchanging high-ranking military and defense delegations between the two neighboring countries to strengthen bilateral relations and to expand security cooperation along the borders.

He also said that Iran and Pakistan should do more to seize the economic opportunities that exits at their borders.

The two sides also discussed the latest developments on Iran-Pakistan relations as well as the situation in Afghanistan.

Munir is the 17th army chief in Pakistan since the country gained independence from Britain in 1947.
