Iran Police probe into martyrdom of Sunni cleric

Zahedan, IRNA – A special task force from the law enforcement of the Islamic Republic of Iran has been formed to probe into the killing of a Sunni cleric in Khash, southeastern Iran, a commander said.

Habib Razdar, the head of law enforcement forces in Khash, Sistan and Baluchestan Province, told IRNA that the police tasked special investigators to identify and arrest those behind the martyrdom of Mowlavi Abdolvahed Rigi, the Imam of Friday Prayer of Sunni Muslims in Khash.

The body of the cleric, who was kidnapped on Thursday, was found in Roudhinar district in Khash-Zahedan Road, the commander said.

The police forces’ primary investigation shows that some unknown gunmen kidnapped the old cleric at Imam Hussain Mosque on Thursday, he noted.

Mehdi Shamsaabadi, the prosecutor of Zahedan, said that the Mowlavi was called by a number of unknown people from the rear door of the Imam Hussain Mosque on Thursday and was taken away from the place in a car that had no registration plate.

After a day of investigation for the cleric’s location, he was found in a sidetrack with three gun wounds in the head, the prosecutor added.

Shamsaabadi noted that Mowlavi Rigi was one of the prominent figures in the province that played a key role in promoting people to preserve peace and tranquility.

The security council of the province issued a statement on Friday, confirming the martyrdom of the cleric, noting that more information would come out after comprehensive investigations.
