FM says Iran opposed to geopolitical changes in region

Yerevan, IRNA – Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian on Saturday said that his country is opposed to any geopolitical change in borders in the region.

Amirabdollahian made the comment during talks with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

The top Iranian diplomat also expressed opposition to the presence of foreign forces in the region, emphasizing that regional problems should be resolved by regional countries.

Also, he expressed Iran’s support for lasting peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan Republic, saying that the Islamic Republic is ready to help its northwestern neighbors resolve their border dispute.

The dispute has been going on for decades now, with the latest border clashes taking place in September.

Amirabdollahian said that the territorial integrity of all countries should be protected.

He called for protecting and developing the North-South Corridor via Armenia as well.

Pashinyan, on his part, thanked the Islamic Republic for its efforts to establish peace and stability in the Caucasus region.

The two officials discussed bilateral relations between Tehran and Yerevan as well, exploring ways on how to further develop the ties.

Both expressed satisfaction over the Saturday opening of the Iranian consulate general in the city of Kapan.

The Armenian premier announced his country’s readiness to open a consulate general in Iran’s northwestern city of Tabriz, which was welcomed by Foreign Minister Amirabdollahian.

The top Iranian diplomat concluded his three-day visit to Armenia on Saturday.
