Iran calls for nuclear disarmament of Zionist regime

New York, IRNA – Deputy Iranian Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Reza Najafi on Monday called for nuclear disarmament of the Zionist regime, saying, that will help achieve the goal of making the Middle East free from weapons of mass destruction.

Najafi was speaking at a ceremony held to mark the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons.

He called nukes a real threat to humanity, saying that their elimination is a global priority and commitment.

But, he added, the United States at a global level and the Zionist regime at the regional level are blocking efforts to achieve the goal of nuclear disarmament.

The Iranian official said that the danger of using nuclear weapons has increased today. Yet, he added, nuclear states have entered a race to use such weapons by saying that they seek nuclear deterrence, and they even transfer nukes to their allies in violation of their commitments.

Najafi said that the Islamic Republic of Iran will continue to play its positive role so that the goal of nuclear disarmament is achieved.

The Iranian official also said that his country strongly supports a proposal by the Non-Aligned Movement to immediately initiate negotiations on a comprehensive nuclear weapons convention, as nuclear disarmament is a binding obligation and the only guarantee to remove the danger of nukes.

September 26 marks the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons, and the ceremony to mark the event has been held annually at the UN headquarters in New York City since 2013.

The designation was proposed by Iran, backed by the Non-Aligned Movement, and then approved by the United Nations General Assembly.
