Anti-Eastern stance of Liz Truss

Tehran, IRNA – Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Liz Truss came to power last Tuesday in a dire economic situation, but she reiterated her stances on support for Ukraine, China-related challenges, and claims on confronting a so-called nuclear Iran.

The new British premier, who is well-known for her anti-Eastern stance, told US President Joe Biden in a phone call that they should prevent what she claimed to be Iran’s acquiring of a nuclear weapon.

The two sides discussed issues such as the need for standing against international challenges such as the so-called nuclear arms of Iran, as well as China-related issues, guaranteeing energy security, and supporting Ukraine.

Despite the fact that London backed the Trump administration’s anti-Eastern policies in particular Iranophobia, political experts are of the opinion that the Truss era will enhance such policies towards Russia, China, and Iran because the UK requires the US to be able to fill the vacuum of the European Union following the Brexit.

According to analysts, Truss would pursue her predecessor Borris Johnson’s foreign policy in dealing with issues such as the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, Moscow over the Ukraine crisis, and China over crises in southern, and Eastern Asia regions such as Taiwan, since she played the role of Johnson’s Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs.

Following recent scandals in his cabinet and the resignation of 50 ministers and members of parliament for cooperating with Johnson, he stepped down from power on July 7, 2022, so Liz Truss, 47, presided over the Conservative Party and has been tasked with taking the helm until national elections in 2024.

Truss & JCPOA

The new British prime minister’s anti-Iran stance came out on her first day in office when she spoke with the US president; although, she had repeatedly warned that all options would be on the table if the nuclear deal also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) collapses.

Even former National Security Advisor of the United States John Bolton urged Truss to ask Biden to relinquish the nuclear accord and announce that all options are on the table. Bolton in a memo on The Wall Street Journal wrote that Truss can be the prime minister that the US needs during the vacuum of leadership in Washington, adding that there are signs, which show the new premier would adopt a more negative stance than previous British governments in the face of the JCPOA.

It should be mentioned that Biden and Truss repeated the claim of Iran’s nuclear weapon, while the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has time and again verified the peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear program.

Russia & Ukraine

Truss has insisted on her war-mongering policy towards Russia, calling for the dispatch of military support for Ukraine and imposition of more sanctions on Russians.

Vladimir Putin, the Russian President, emphasized that the way Britain selects its leaders is not democratic because the British people do not participate in electing their rulers.

A new poll in Britain showed that half of the population is unhappy with the premiership of Liz Truss and 67 percent of the pollsters do not trust her cabinet members.

Dmitry Sergeyevich Peskov, press secretary for the Russian president, pointed out Truss’ anti-Russia statements, noting that Moscow does not expect an improvement of ties with London in short term.

China & Taiwan

Bolton further referred to the new prime minister’s stance towards China, writing that Truss’ support for the American policies will be a good start for her government and that it seems she plans to stand against China in the Indian and the Pacific oceans, so she is keen on perceiving China and Russia as dangers not only rivals.

Britain’s support for the United States’ policies towards Russia and China has been condemned by economic experts, who stressed that the improvement of ties with Beijing can help London overcome economic pressures to some extent and that putting pressure on China would harm Britain’s economy.

Analysts believe that the US attempts to propagate Sinophobia to pursue its policies. Chinese experts said that deterioration of relationship between London and Beijing will badly affect the UK at a time when it is facing serious economic problems.
