Iran climbs up in UNDP human development index

Tehran, IRNA – The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) report shows that Iran has climbed up in the human development index (HDI), standing in a better position in comparison to 115 countries.

The UNDP has recently issued its newest report on the human development index, which contains statistics related to HDI in 191 states, including Iran.

The HDI report 2022, which has been prepared on the basis of information gathered in 2021, shows that the ranking of the Islamic Republic of Iran has gone up one position; therefore, Iran’s ranking improved from 77 in 2020 to 76 in 2021.

The one position climb-up in the ranking happened after Iran’s rankings in two previous years descended three positions in terms of the HDI.

According to the report, Iran is among the league of countries that have high ranks in terms of the human development index.

The UNDP report classifies world states into four groups, including 66 countries with very high HDI, 49 states with high HDI, 44 nations with average HDI, and 32 countries with low HDI.

Iran’s ranking stands only 10 positions lower than the last country in the high HDI group.

The report also shows that the human development index in Iran is better than in countries such as China, India, Brazil, South Africa, Indonesia, Ukraine, Jordan, Lebanon, Algeria, Egypt, Cuba, and Iraq.

Other countries, which stand in a better position than Iran include Thailand, Belarus, Oman, Kuwait, Turkey, Italy, France, the US, the UK, and Japan.

Switzerland has been declared the most developed country in the world in terms of HDI, followed by Norway, Iceland, Hong Kong, Australia, Denmark, Sweden, Ireland, Germany, and the Netherlands.

South Sudan stands the last country in terms of human development index in the world.

The COVID-19 pandemic affected the HDI in 2021, causing a decrease in the index. The HDI was reported to be 0.739 in 2019, while the number declined to 0.732 in 2021.
