US presence in region to increase insecurity and spread terror: Spox

Tehran, IRNA – Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Nasser Kanani said on Saturday that any plan aimed at increasing US presence in West Asia will only bring insecurity and instability and result in spreading terrorism.

Kanani was reacting to plans by the United States and Israel for a joint pact with Arab countries to counter what they call threats by Iran.

The diplomat described the plan as a provocative move, and said that Iran views it as a threat against its national security, as well as the security of the region.

He said that the US has no correct understanding of the realities in the region and is raising such issues only with the aim of sowing the seeds of discord and spreading Iranophobia among regional countries.

This shows that what is important for the US is its illegal interests and continued support for the Zionist regime, Kanani added.

That’s while, he noted, the Islamic Republic of Iran has always stressed dialog and regional cooperation, without foreigners’ interference, to safeguard security and common interests of the countries in the region.

The spokesman also said that attempts to increase new security concerns in the region will have no result, but to weaken regional security and serve the Zionist regime’s security interests.

The entry of foreigners in any regional process not only fails to promote security and stability, but itself is the main cause of tensions and regional rifts, Kanani said.
