Iran terms energy diplomacy top priority

Tehran, IRNA – The 13th government of the Islamic Republic of Iran in the field of energy has declared its priority to develop energy diplomacy in the world.

Energy diplomacy is a top priority for the 13th government in Iran and significant actions have been formed in the field of energy diplomacy from neighboring states to South American countries, and Iran can play a strategic role in energy developments.

The gas trade is one of the ways to become active in this area, Iran used swaps in the gas trade and has so far managed to revive the Turkmen gas swap contract from Iran’s territory to Azerbaijan.

The imbalance between supply and demand made the Iranian Minister of Petroleum Javad Owji determined to restore the strained relations with Turkmenistan, which were caused by the country's gas cut in the winter of 2016, and unlock relations between the two states.

Relations between Iran and Azerbaijan also moved forward in parallel with the Iran-Turkmenistan relationship. Owji met and held talks with Deputy Prime Minister of Azerbaijan Shahin Mostafaev on November 21, 2021.

During this meeting, Owji said that Azerbaijan has a favorable capacity in the oil and gas sector, adding that a good agreement was made with Azerbaijan about gas swaps from neighboring countries to Azerbaijan such as Turkmenistan.

The negotiations between the delegation of Iran and Turkmenistan on November 28, 2021, came to the conclusion and the two states signed a gas swap agreement on the sidelines of the 15th Summit of the Organization for Economic Cooperation (ECO) in Ashgabat.

The operationalization of the Turkmenistan-Iran-Azerbaijan gas swap agreement strengthened relations between them and paved the way for cooperation in other areas.

Owji met and held talks with Azerbaijani Minister of Economy Mikayil Jabbarov on Friday (June 3, 2022) in Baku, Azerbaijan.

During the meeting, the two sides signed a memorandum of understanding on enhancing mutual cooperation.

Under the memorandum of understanding, the parties agreed to double the volume of gas transported from Turkmenistan to the Republic of Azerbaijan via Iranian lines.

The two sides also discussed other economic issues of mutual interest in the areas of energy, oil, gas, transportation, and bilateral trade.
