Iran slams Canada’s decision to call off soccer friendly with Iran

Tehran, IRNA – Iran’s Deputy Judiciary chief and the Secretary of the High Council of Human Rights Kazam Gharibabadi on Friday strongly criticized the decision made by Canada to cancel a friendly game between the national soccer teams of Iran and Canada.

Writing on his personal Twitter account, Gharibabadi said, “Canada’s decision to call off a friendly with Iran is testimony to the fact that the so-called Land of the Free can’t keep politics off the pitch.”

Canada Soccer said on Thursday that it has cancelled the international match that was scheduled for June 5 against Iran as part of the Men’s National Team preparations for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.

The Thursday statement by Canada Soccer claimed that the federation is cancelling the controversial exhibition game against Iran initially set for next month in Vancouver, saying it has become “significantly divisive.”

It provided no more details.
