West, especially US, responsible for potential failure of Vienna talks: Iran FM

New York, IRNA - Iranian Minister of Foreign Affairs Hossein Amirabdollahian has warned that the Western powers in particular the United States should be held accountable for possible failure of the talks in Vienna to revive the 2015 nuclear deal and lift anti-Iran sanctions.

The top diplomat made the remarks on the sidelines of the 58th Munich Security Conference in Germany during an interview with CNN on Saturday, saying that the Islamic Republic is optimistic because the administration of President Ebrahim Raisi is serious to achieve a good agreement in Vienna, Austria.

Christiane Amanpour, CNN's chief international correspondent, quoted Amirabdollahian on her Twitter account as saying that "Tehran is 'very optimistic' of reaching a nuclear agreement in ongoing negotiations in Vienna; however, if the talks fail, it's 'the Americans and the other side that are responsible for it.'"

She also tweeted that the Iranian FM explained that the Raisi administration is keen on reaching a good and instant consensus.

The FM went on to say that Iran tried hard to reach a good agreement and that in the sensitive situation, if the US and other Western parties do not take a realistic stance, they will be definitely responsible for possible failure of the negotiations.

But the Iranians will continue efforts to achieve a good agreement in Vienna, he added.

The head of Iran's foreign diplomacy apparatus also addressed audience in the Munich Security Conference saying that his colleagues are facing the West's double game concerning "text" and "time;" but the Islamic Republic is ready to reach a good agreement in the shortest time possible if the other side is ready to adopt political decisions.

According to president.ir, presidents of France and Iran held a phone call on Saturday, discussing the latest developments in the Vienna talks.

President Raisi told his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron that the Iranian delegation was pursuing the talks seriously and that the Islamic Republic had proposed constructive suggestions during the Joint Commission meetings of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) in Vienna.

The Iranian president also emphasized that any agreement in Vienna should include lifting of sanctions, giving reliable assurances and concluding political allegations.

Pressures and political allegations with the aim of pushing the Iranian nation will decline possibility of reaching consensus in the Vienna talks, he warned.

Raisi further referred to the history of Iran's cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), noting that Tehran has always proved its good faith and foiled plots hatched by enemies.

The eighth round of the Vienna Talks kicked off on December 27, 2021, which has been the lengthiest round of negotiations to pave the way for revival of the JCPOA and removal of anti-Iran sanctions.
