During the meeting in Baghdad, both sides exchanged views on the latest situation of the Shalamcheh-Basra railway project.
They also discussed other related issues in Iran-Iraq cooperation and bilateral ties.
Iran’s part of the railway connection with 17 kilometers length was constructed in 2011, but the 32-kilometer part of the Iraqi side has yet to be implemented by Iraq’s government.
The connection makes it easier for Iranians to visit religious cities in Iraq and facilitates transit transportation.
On Aug 9, 2021, in his meeting with the Secretary-General of the Council of Ministers of Iraq Hamid Naim Al-Ghazi, Masjedi asked the Iraqi side to complete the railway connection project, underlining that Iran has done all preparations for the project.
An Iranian official on Sep 18, 2019, announced the contribution of the Mostazafan Foundation for the construction of the Shalamcheh-Basra Railway and said that as a result of this project, Iran Railway will connect to Iraq.
Deputy Minister and Managing Director of Road Infrastructure Development and Transport Company of Ministry of Roads and Urban Development Kheirollah Khademi had said that the length of the Shalamcheh-Basra railway project is 32 kilometers and is being implemented with 60-percent investment by the Mostazafan Foundation and 40 percent by Iran Railway Company.
He said that connecting Iran's railway to Iraq is very effective for the economy of both countries.
