American lawyer downplays Trump attempt to create division

Tehran, IRNA - Leading lawyer, strategist and communications expert Elisabeth Myers has played down the attempts made by former US President Donald Trump to create division and to demand absolute fealty among the Republicans.

"I anticipate that Dems will maintain their majority in the House and Senate," Myers told IRNA.

"But it is going to take a lot of work by Democrats and Dem grassroots activists as Trump continues to stoke the fires of division and demand absolute fealty among the Republican cultists to the lie that the 2020 election was stolen from him," she added.

In response to a question whether the Democrats will be able to maintain their majority in the Congress, she said, "I anticipate that Dems will maintain their majority in the House and Senate."

"But it is going to take a lot of work by Democrats and Dem grassroots activists as Trump continues to stoke the fires of division and demand absolute fealty among the Republican cultists to the lie that the 2020 election was stolen from him," she noted.

Elaborating on the outcome of the election, Myers said, "I suspect that the number of progressive seats will not increase, given that the majority of Americans appear to be aggregating around the center in order to defeat Trumpism and the deliberate undermining of American democracy by a minority that happens to be extremely vocal and aggressive and egged on by the former, twice impeached, president."

When asked whether opponents of Trump in the Republican Party can obtain more seats, she said, "We are seeing Trump-supported candidates beginning to distance themselves from Trump."

"Based on the gubernatorial election in Virginia won by Glenn Youngkin, such distancing may increasingly be a winning strategy," she added.

"I expect that as more Republicans are forced to come around to the idea that Trump lost the 2020 election given the absence of any scintilla of proof to the contrary, we will see Republicans who are not Trump supporters gaining more traction," she noted.

"Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger are fighters: they are not scared of Trump and are not going to back down."

Elaborating on Trump's impact on the election, Myers stated, "Trump is already playing a role in the 2022 elections as well as the 2024 elections, by effectively destroying the fundamental institution of the American voting apparatus and installing Trump loyalists in the state legislatures, especially state officials who are typically responsible for elections."

"I do believe he intends to run in 2024, because that is the only way he remains relevant and in the news," she reiterated.

Responding the question whether the 2024 election in the US would bring about confrontation between Biden and Trump, she said, "To keep it in political terms I wouldn’t use the word 'confrontation.'"

"However, I do expect that that they will be facing each other as the Democratic and Republican candidates, respectively, unless there is some significant intervening factor – such as Trump being put in prison for his numerous crimes committed before, during, and after his one term in office or because of his poor health, she added.
