Tehran summit on Afghanistan, new promise for region: Pakistan daily

Islamabad, IRNA -- A Pakistani English newspaper says the recent meeting of Afghanistan neighbors in Tehran inspires hope for the region, as the countries agreed that Afghanistan was in need of a greater global backing to return to normalcy.

The Nation in its editorial comments on Friday said the second ministerial meeting of Afghanistan's neighboring countries hosted by the Islamic Republic of Iran is a new promise for the region.
It added the need for world cooperation to safeguard the lives of Afghan people is vital, and it is staggering that apart from Pakistan, only a few countries have raised this call.
The paper said Afghanistan has just come out of the midst of a twenty-year-old war, which occurred when the ashes of another previous twenty-year-old war had barely settled.
It went on to say while the current government is absolutely not ideal, the only way the rights of the Afghan people can be secured, and peace of the region can be achieved, is through cooperation and negotiation—not isolation and more conflict.
The Nation said the recent meeting held in Iran shows that our efforts are not going to waste. The meeting hosted by Iranian Foreign Minister Dr Abdullahian, which was attended by the foreign ministers of China, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, inspires hope for the region, as the countries agreed that Afghanistan was in need of a greater global backing to return to normalcy.
The paper said the meeting holds a lot of promise for several reasons. Firstly, it was attended by countries with which a joint alliance now looks inevitable in the future. The changes in the diplomatic policies of India and the US have shifted the geopolitics of the region and pushed closer relations between Central Asia, Pakistan, Iran and China, which realise the enormous economic potential that could be utilised with more cooperative efforts.
It noted this meeting holds utmost importance for the reason it was convened—regional security. All countries in the meeting, through their geographical proximity to Afghanistan, have a huge stake in maintaining peace, and will be impacted by any disruption or rise of terrorist outfits in Afghanistan.
The presence of Moscow is also powerful, considering it played a part in the negotiations between the Taliban, the previous Afghan government and the US.
