Enhanced Tehran-Riyadh engagement a positive development: Pakistan

Islamabad, IRNA -- Pakistani Foreign Ministry spokesman hopes that enhanced confidence and engagement between Iran and Saudi Arabia would foster durable peace in the region and this would be a very positive development.

Responding to a question at his weekly news briefing in Islamabad about the recent exchange of various delegations between Iran and Pakistan, including the visit of Iran's Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces Major General Hossein Bagheri, Asim Iftikhar said there has been very good interaction with Iran during recent visits.

“Pakistan-Iran ties have been fraternal and friendly. As immediate neighbor, we attach great importance to this relationship. We also have dialogue to address matters of mutual concern,” he said.

He added that all of this goes with our policy of friendly neighborhood. We have also been collaborating closely on Afghanistan.

Asim Iftikhar answering a question on Iran-Saudi Arabia relations said we hope that enhanced confidence and engagement between the two countries would foster durable peace in the region and this would be a very positive development.

In an interview with Arabic section of Russia Today (RT) television on the sidelines of the SCO summit in Tajikistan last month, Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan said that better understanding between Tehran and Riyadh was in the region's interest.

In a recent interview with the Financial Times, the Saudi foreign minister described the talks with Iran as "exploratory" and said that the talks with Iran were "intimate".

Faisal bin Farhan, noting that Riyadh has always wanted a way to stabilize the region, said that his country is serious about negotiating with Tehran.
