Japan lauds Iran's role in fighting narcotics

Tehran, IRNA - Japanese Ambassador in Tehran Aikawa Kazutoshi said that Iran plays an important role in fighting narcotics in the world.

Speaking in a meeting with Iran’s Anti-Narcotics Police Chief Brigadier-General Majid Karimi, Aikawa Kazutoshi said that successful achievements made by Iranian anti-narcotics police are of great importance.

He hoped for exchanging Iran's experiences with other countries in international annual events.

He expressed Japan readiness for developing bilateral cooperation in intelligence and enforcement fields.

Meanwhile, Karimi stressed promoting cooperation in fighting drug trafficking.

Iran is keen on developing cooperation with Japan in enforcement and anti-narcotics fields, he added.

He also referred to large volume of narcotics produced in eastern neighbors of Iran, saying based on UNODC reports, over nine thousand tons of narcotics are produced in Afghanistan.

No country can fight narcotics alone and it needs international cooperation, he reiterated.

According to UNODC Iran discovers 90% of the opium, 47% of the morphine, and 27% of the heroin discovered in the world, Karimi said.

Iranian Anti-Narcotics Police is ready to boost bilateral interactions in exchanging information on key elements and drug trafficking networks, accelerating extradition of convicts, exchanging experiences aiming to equip the sniffer dogs center, and transferring modern equipment, he added.
