Iranian women's first ever trace in history of AFC Cup

Tehran, IRNA - Asian Football Confederation released a report on Saturday on historic presence of the Iranian women at the AFC Women's Asian Cup.

"Iran defeat Jordan on penalties to book historic Finals ticket," AFC reported by a title.

After their victory over Jordan, Iranian women, under the coach Maryam Irandoost, reached the finals and this achievement is for the first ever time.

Islam Republic of Iran pulled off a stunning upset to qualify for their first ever AFC Women’s Asian Cup, defeating Jordan 4-2 in penalties after a goalless draw at Bunyodkor Stadium on Saturday, according to AFC.

Irandoost’s side defied history and their world ranking of 72 to secure their place for India 2022 in dramatic fashion, ending a heartbroken Jordan outfit’s bid for a third successive appearance at the Finals.

Goalkeeper Zohreh Koudaei was the hero for Iran, saving two penalties in the shootout to secure a milestone result for Iranian women’s football, and one which also keeps them in the race for a spot in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, AFC reported.

Through its 5-0 winning over Bangladesh, Iranian women entered the Asian tournament powerfully.

Success for Iran's female athletes is not limited to football and Asian Cup; the Iranian women in recent years have shined at the world contests.

In December 2019, the Iranian women's Alysh team clinched the championship title at the world Alysh competitions held in Nur Sultan, Kazakhstan. The victory was the first in history achieved by Iran's female Alysh wrestlers, which made Iran proud of its powerful women.

Less than a month after a the first ever Olympic medal of Iranian women was gained by Kimia Alizadeh in Rio 2016 Olympic taekwondo, Iran's female Para-athletes won three gold medals at the Rio Paralympics in the same year to show the power of Iranian women in the international sports events.

Also, Iran's Mansourian sisters well-known to the world for their Wushu capabilities have brought several gold and other colorful medals from the world competitions to the country.

Surely, there are many other names of Iranian women, who have got gold medals and have shined at the world competitions and Olympic and Paralympic games, but their names are not mentioned here.
