Guterres and Amirabdollahian discussed issues of interests, including the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and regional developments. The UN secretary general congratulated the Iranian foreign minister for his appointment.
Guterres dismissed the United States’ withdrawal from the Iran 2015 nuclear deal, stressing that the UN has always supported the international accord.
The UN secretary general also expressed readiness to cooperate with the Islamic Republic to resolve regional issues such as the war in Yemen.
Amirabdollahian, for his part, emphasized that the Raisi administration takes pragmatic stance on the JCPOA, noting that Tehran seeks to see practical result of negotiations.

In another meeting with United Nations General Assembly President Abdulla Shahid, the Iranian top diplomat underlined that the assassination of Major General Qassem Soleimani by the United States in Iraqi soil is the most apparent symbol of terrorism.
Thursday noon local time, Amirabdollahian addressed Shahid saying that a legal committee in Iran is following up the assassination case in order to bring perpetrators to justice, but the UN can play a significant role in this respect.
Pointing out to the constructive role of the Islamic Republic in collaborating with regional governments to confront terrorism in Lebanon, Iraq and Afghanistan, the FM noted that Tehran expects the UNGA to strengthen multilateralism in the face of the US’s unilateralism and lawlessness.
Abdullah Shahid described multilateralism as the only path forward, arguing that the UN is the best mechanism to enhance multilateralism.
Furthermore, in a meeting with his Azerbaijani counterpart, Amirabdollahian emphasized that the new establishment in Iran gives importance to expansion of ties with neighboring states.
As to the importance of mutual support in regional and international occasions, the Iranian foreign minister underlined that the Islamic Republic has always backed territorial integrity of Azerbaijan Republic.
Referring to joint ventures in different fields such as electricity, gas, dam building, trade and transit of goods, Amirabdollahian called for more efforts to implement existing agreements.
He also emphasized that both countries should not allow third parties to interfere in amicable relations of Azerbaijan Republic and Islamic Republic of Iran.
