Iraqi Airways cancels flights from Iran's Mashhad

Mashhad, IRNA – An aviation official said on Sunday that Iraqi Airways has canceled today’s flights from Mashhad Hasheminejad International Airport.

Hassan Jafari, the public relations manager of Khorasan Razavi airports, told IRNA that the airline has five flights from Iraqi cities to Mashhad and then back to Iraq.

The airline, however, announced early on Sunday that all these flights were canceled, according to Jafari.

A passenger told IRNA that the cancellation was because Iraqi immigration police refused to issue visas in Iraqi soil.

The cancellation happens at a time when thousands of Iranians are planning to be in Iraq during the Arbaeen rituals to participate in the world-renowned ceremony.

Arbaeen which falls on September 28 this year is a mourning ritual observed by Shia Muslims worldwide marking the 40th day after the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (AS) (the third Shia Imam and the grandson of Prophet Mohammad [PBUH]).
