Currently the SCO has eight main members, China, Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, India and Pakistan, while the Islamic Republic of Iran by the side of Mongolia, Belarus and Afghanistan are the observer members of that organization. Iran’s observer status at the SCO was gained in the year 2005.
Meanwhile, the SCO has some dialogue partners, including the Azerbaijan Republic, Armenia Republic, Kingdom of Cambodia, the Democratic Federal Republic of Nepal, Republic of Turkey, and the Socialist Democratic of Sri Lanka.
The main objective of the SCO is strengthening mutual and neighborhood respect among member countries, improving their effective political, commercial, economic research and cultural cooperation, and also in such fields as training, energy, transportation, tourism, environment protection.
Joint efforts aimed at preservation and guaranteeing peace, security, and stability in the region and moving towards the establishment of a logical new International political and economic system is another major objective of the SCO.
This organization’s interior policy is shaped in the framework of mutual respect, mutual interests, equality, mutual consultations, respecting cultural diversity, and enthusiasm for joint development, while its foreign policy is based on the fundamentals of non-aligned movement, not targeting the other countries, and openness.
The SCO Heads of States Conference (HSC) is the highest decision making foundation of the organization, which convenes once a year, adopts decisions and issues directives on the entire important issues of the organization.
Accordingly, a summit meeting of the organization once a year convenes to discuss the multilateral cooperation strategy of the SCO and its priorities, resolve the major economic issues, and ratify the annual budget of the organization.
The official languages of the organization are Russian and Chinese.
