Religious democracy main characteristic of Iran: Minister

Tehran, IRNA - Iran's Interior Minister Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli said that religious democracy is the important feature of the Islamic Republic, which shows all authorities are being directly or indirectly chosen by people's votes.

The incumbent interior minister made the remark during the ceremony of endorsing President-elect Ebrahim Raisi by Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei at Imam Khomeini Husseiniyya in Tehran on Tuesday, addressing the audience with a report on Iran's June 18, 2021 presidential election.

The religious democracy is an important characteristic of the holy establishment of the Islamic Republic of Iran, where all officials and policymakers are being elected directly or indirectly by people's votes, Rahmani Fazli said.

The Islamic Republic is honored to hold 40 nationwide elections, he said, adding that 11 out of the 40 elections were held in full accuracy and security over the eight years of President Hassan Rouhani's administration.

The minister went on to say that the 13th presidential election on June 18 was somehow distinguished because it was held following the imposition of cruel sanctions imposed by the United States and the Iranian people suffered from the biting effects of the embargo on their livelihood, as well as the problems created by the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic.

The 13th presidential election was held simultaneous with the sixth round of city and village councils elections, the first mid-term for 11th parliament’s by-election, and the second mid-term for the fifth Assembly of Experts election, he mentioned, adding that the enemies of the Islamic Republic propagated against the elections, but the Iranians showed big turnout.

The Ministry of Interior, as the responsible apparatus to hold elections in Iran, prepared the prerequisites for the 2021 polls based on intelligent guidelines of Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei in order to pave the way for holding a lawful, unbiased, and secure election throughout the country and in more than 100 foreign countries.

Out of over 59.3 million eligible voters in the presidential election, nearly 29 million took part in the national event. Ebrahim Raisi won the presidential race with 17,926,345 votes out of the total 28,933,004 ballots, which shows 48.8 percent turnout.
