Soraya Aghaei became first Iranian woman to qualify for Olympics in badminton

Tehran, IRNA - Iranian women athletes gained 10th quota places for Tokyo Olympics and set a new national record in the number.

After 6 times of participation in the Olympic Games from 1996 Atlanta to 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, the number of women athletes who gained quota places for the Olympic Games increased from one to nine in Rio, Brazil. Rio also holds the record for most qualifications from Atlanta to Tokyo.

In recent days, Iranian women athletes have been able to increase Iran's quota places for Tokyo 2020 Olympics by gaining two more places.

Soraya Aghaei became the first Iranian woman to qualify for the Olympics in badminton. The last badminton qualification dates back to the 2008 Beijing Olympics, and for the first time in the history of this field of sport, a woman will represent Iran in badminton in Tokyo; also, Farzaneh Fasihi, a female Iranian sprinter, could qualify for Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Fasihi's qualification is under universality quota.

Universality quota is an opportunity given to one male or one female from countries to gain qualification for the Olympic Games and after allocating universality quota to Fasihi, the number of Iranian female athletes who had been qualified for Tokyo Olympics reached nine.

Previously, Iranian female shooter Najmeh Khedmati earned a quota place for the Tokyo 2020, she came fifth at women's 10m air rifle with a score of 186.6 in the 2019 ISSF World Cup Rifle/Pistol underway in Beijing, China.

Khedmati earned a quota place for the Tokyo 2020 in April 2019.

In 2015, she was the first-ever shooting gold medal of Women's 10m Air Rifle at the 2015 Universiade games (World University Games) in South Korea.

Iranian shooter Najmeh Khedmati earns quota place for Tokyo 2020

Iranian shooter Armina Sadeghian secured a quota place for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games in the women's 10 meters air rifle final in the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) Rifle and Pistol World Cup in Rio de Janeiro.

Sadeghian registered 628.3 points and qualified for the final.

Iranian women athletes who have booked Tokyo Olympics quota places in Shooting is as follows: 

Armina Sadeghian, Najmeh Khedmati, Fatemeh Karamzadeh and Hanieh Rostamian in shooting, Sara Bahmanyar and Hamideh Abbasali in karate, Nazanin Molaei in rowing, Nahid Kiani in taekwondo and Farzaneh Fasihi in track and field, and Sorayya Aghaei.
